Dear Members of the UB Community,

A joint initiative of the U.S. Departments of State and Education, International Education Week will be celebrated worldwide on November 14-18, 2011.  In recognition of this special occasion, a series of events of both a celebratory and educational nature will take place at UB.  

IEW events have been organized by UB offices, UB academic departments, UB international student clubs, the Natya School of Classical Dance, and the Alison L. Des Forges Memorial Committee. The UB offices and departments include Alumni Relations, Asian Studies, Career Services, Confucius Institute, Honors College, Intercultural & Diversity Center, International Student & Scholar Services, School of Management, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, School of Social Work, Student Leadership & Community Engagement, Study Abroad Programs, Undergraduate Academies and Wellness Education Services.

Korean Poongmul drumming, also called Nong Ak, means farmer’s music. About two thousand years old, it is played during festivals to celebrate planting and harvesting, and is accompanied by an energetic dance. The Korean Folk Art Club (KFAC) will perform at IEW for the 11th consecutive year. They are the only club which has participated in every celebration of IEW at UB.

Two dances will be performed. The first, La Morena, is a compilation of merengue and bachata that reflects the younger generation of Latin dance. It tells the story of a man who lost the love of his life. The second dance is titled Valio La Pena; it is a salsa dance to a song by the famous Marc Anthony.

Unsuspecting travelers are prone to accidents and exposures which can ruin a pleasant vacation or working trip. Food and water bourne infections and infections transmitted by arthropod vectors are common. Unusual parasites live in usual places and can make the post travel re-entry uncomfortable. Come get some practical advice to avoid unpleasant situations when traveling.

Dinh Q. Le: Saigon Diary is a multimedia art exhibition that offers incisive commentary on the radical changes taking place in Vietnam as it rapidly moves away from socialism to embrace capitalism, giving birth to a new generation of consumers and their attendant waste.

Green is the color of hope. Green is the color of Islam. And green was the symbol of Iranian protestors who led the Green Revolution in Iran in 2009. The Green Wave combines actual footage of demonstrations, Facebook and Twitter reports, interviews with exiled Iranians and prominent human rights activists, and animated depictions of life in Iranian prisons. All bear witness to the struggles of the Iranian people as they clashed with government militia. The Green Wave is a memorial to those who believed in more freedom and lost their lives seeking it.

Traditional Taekwondo was established during the 1950’s, and has since grown to what we now know as Sport Taekwondo. This demonstration will include traditional forms of Taekwondo, or Poomse, self-defense techniques and board breaking.

World Tai Chi Champion Bob Gott will offer two exhibitions of Tai Chi forms, which are simply collections of individual tai chi moves, or postures, linked together with transitions or linking steps to form a recognizable sequence.  Sifu Gott will demonstrate a form using the Jian (a straight double-edged sword) and will then offer a form with the Dao (a saber).  All of the movements included in the forms are extremely precise, sequential and deliberate.  Come see the expert technique which won Sifu Gott the Tai Chi World Championship in China.

Zbigniew Brzezinski, one of the architects of normalization of relations between the United States and China in 1979, will give his current assessment of U.S.-China relations and take questions from audience members in a live national webcast. Following the webcast, Peter Geithner, former director of Asia Programs at the Ford Foundation, will speak on-site at UB on the development of the nongovernmental sector in China. China Town Hall is a national day of programming organized annually by the National Committee on U.S.-China relations.

Indian Classical Dance Performance

The three dances will be performed in the South Indian Classical Dance style-Bharata Natyam. Salutation showcases the traditional instruments that are used to accompany the dance and ends with a salutation to Lord Ganesha. Meera Bhajan tells the story of Meera, whose husband makes her drink poison (which does she happily), only to be saved by divine intervention. The Dance of Shiva is a joyous dance describing the dance of Lord Shiva, the God of dance.

The Nadia Ibrahim Middle Eastern Dance Troupe is the only professional dance group in Western New York which performs authentic dances of the Middle East. Nadia, who is of Lebanese descent, teaches and choreographs dances of Lebanon, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Tunisia, Morocco and the Sudan, just to mention a few.

From the Hollywood bowl to the Kennedy Center, Rhythm of Rajasthan has captivated North American audiences with their dynamic interpretations of one of the world’s most vibrant and evocative music cultures.
