Join the Confucius Institute at the University at Buffalo and the Chinese Language Program at Nichols School for this exciting Chinese New Year celebration. Come enjoy a program of music and dance by the Performing Arts Troupe of the China University of Geosciences from Wuhan, China.

“MIRACLE IN RWANDA”
*******************

In memory of the internationally-known human rights activist Dr. Alison L. Des Forges, who was a victim of the crash of Flight 3407 on February 12, 2009, a one-woman play called Miracle in Rwanda will be performed at UB. Based on the book Left to Tell by Immaculée Ilibagiza, the play portrays Ilibagiza’s surviving the Rwandan genocide by hiding in a tiny bathroom with seven other women for ninety-one days. Created and performed by actress Leslie Lewis Sword, Miracle in Rwanda has traveled across the United States, Canada, India and Rwanda.

Alison Des Forges was Senior Advisor to the Africa Division of Human Rights Watch and one of the world’s leading experts on Rwanda. Her book Leave None to Tell the Story: Genocide in Rwanda is a landmark account of the 1994 genocide. Her tireless efforts to awaken the international community to the horrors of that event earned her many awards, including a MacArthur Foundation Award in 1999.

The producer of the play DeWane Allen Harris, a UB graduate, has organized a full slate of events, including two films preceding the play and commentary after each play performance.

Film: “Hotel Rwanda” (4:00 p.m.) with commentary by Paul Rusesbagina, whose heroic efforts to save hundreds of Tutsis are portrayed in the film

Play: “Miracle in Rwanda” (7:30 p.m.) with commentary by Monique Mujawamariya, Rwandan survivor of the genocide and founder of the Rwandan Association for the Defense of Human Rights and Public Liberties, and Tim Longman, former Human Rights Watch researcher on Rwanda and currently Professor of Political Science and Director of the African Studies Center at Boston University

Film: “Sometime in April” (5:00 p.m.)

Play: “Miracle in Rwanda” (7:30 p.m.) with commentary by Claude Welch, Professor of Political Science at UB, and Shaun Irlam, Professor of Comparative Literature at UB. Closing remarks will be provided by Roger Des Forges, husband of Alison Des Forges and Professor of History at UB.

Tickets for the play are $10 for students with ID and $25 for the general public. Tickets are available at the SBI ticket office, 221 Student Union, UB or online at www.sa.buffalo.edu/rwanda (click on” Tickets") or www.subboard.com/tickets/.

Join ISSS for a trip to Western New York’s premiere indoor climbing center, which features more than 550 square meters of climbing space and a vertical height of over 6 meters.

Cost: $20 (for round-trip transportation, instructional/safety lesson, harness rental)

DOWNHILL SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING
***********************************

Have you ever wanted to try downhill (Alpine) skiing or snowboarding?  If your answer is "Yes," come join ISSS for a day of downhill skiing and snowboarding.  You select the activity and skill level you prefer.  Downhill skiing and snowboarding are a great way to enjoy the Buffalo winter and take advantage of the snow. Come join us!

Date: Saturday, February 20
Meeting Time: 8:15 a.m. (Flint Loop)
Return Time: 6:30 p.m. (Flint Loop)
Sign-Up Deadline: 12:00, Wednesday, February 17 (or until sold out)

Cost**: There are different packages available for beginners and experienced skiers/ snowboarders.  Skiing prices are $42* for beginners and $57* for experienced skiers. Snowboarding prices are $45* for beginners and $64* for experienced snowboarders.

* An optional equipment insurance charge of $1 is also highly recommended. 

**The cost of the trip includes round-trip transportation, complete equipment rentals, a lesson from a professional, and a ticket to ski or snowboard all day!

Global Competency Series: Part I - “Developing an Internationalist Skill Set”

This workshop will examine the foundations of diversity and explore how cultural background impacts individuals’ perceptions about difference, as well as how to begin to develop an internationalist skill set which includes: developing intercultural communication skills; learning to listen through listening AND observing; thriving in multicultural settings with a diverse range of personalities and learning styles; and enhancing one’s ability to work effectively as part of a multicultural/multinational team. You may register for any or all three parts of this series. If you are a UB student who would like to earn a Global Competency certificate, please register for and attend all three sessions of the Global Competency Series. Global competency can be defined as possessing the knowledge, skills and awareness that enable an individual to interact successfully and respectfully with people of different cultures, experiences, viewpoints and values.
